How God-Given Adaptability Helped Crows and Ravens Take Over the World

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—I ran across this article, which immediately reminded me of the providence of God on post-flood animals. The title of the article predictably attributes the geographic success of ravens and crows to “evolution,” but in reality, what is discussed is adaptation, not molecules-to-man evolution.

Ravens and crows have a worldwide distribution.

Ravens and crows (and there really is not much difference between them except that ravens are generally larger and crows typically have a bit more color variability) have a worldwide distribution. Ravens are scattered all over the northern hemisphere, and crows inhabit both the northern and southern hemispheres. The news article and the journal article it was summarizing were attempting to figure out why ravens and crows were so successful. Ravens are in a family of birds (think biblical kind) that also includes crows, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, and others.

But examining living and museum specimens, the researchers in the Nature paper found that ravens and crows have longer wing lengths, bigger body sizes, and bigger relative brain sizes even among other corvids. They also pointed out that ravens and crows (genus Corvus) have different color variations (not all are black), based on their environment (some are black and white, some are blue and white, or mottled), and are known to use tools and even drop rocks on potential nest predators.

According to the news article,

Longer wings means higher flying capacities that allowed the birds to disperse across the world. Big brains relative to their bodies suggest that ancestral crows and ravens were behaviorally flexible. They were smarter than other Corvids and, therefore, able to figure out how to live in a new environment, increasing their chances of survival. Their bigger body size also gave them a competitive advantage over smaller species, helping them establish in a new place.

But another factor that has really aided their worldwide distribution is their diet. Ravens and crows will eat anything, including other birds’ nestlings or their eggs, fruits, nuts, seeds, mollusks, crustaceans, earthworms, frogs, eggs, mice, carrion, and will even forage through human garbage. We know that all air-breathing, terrestrial-based biblical kinds were taken onto the ark by Noah. And as I read the article, what stood out to me was that a raven was the first animal to leave the ark (Genesis 8:6-7). And the implication from the biblical account is that, by the time of the flood, the raven was omnivorous and so had plenty of food (like carrion, crustaceans, mollusks, or earthworms) to survive outside the ark.

Just as we see wolves, coyotes, and jackals (from the original dog kind), and lions, tigers, and pumas (from the original cat kind), so the corvid kind speciated out into ravens, crows, jays, etc. But speciation usually involves a loss of genetic information, as each species becomes specialized for its environment, and mutations occur within the genome. This is not the direction needed for amoeba-to-astronaut evolution, even though the news articles tout that angle.

It is also possible that the released ark raven had an early advantage over the rest of the animals, which were told to be fruitful and multiply when they left the ark (Genesis 8:17). Now we don’t know if that raven was a male or female, but since the dove Noah later sent out was female, it seems reasonable to think the raven was too. If she was pregnant when she left the ark, then 18–21 days later she might have laid her eggs. Females lay between three and seven eggs and don’t rely upon the male for brooding as some birds do. However, ravens typically mate for life, so the male would have been sure to find her when he was released (around 100 days later). But even if that’s not the case, we know that ravens and crows are common all across their vast ranges and can rapidly reproduce, with very little concern about predation.

Now, let me give you a quote from the journal article and then interpret it with our biblical glasses on.

Our analyses show that in ~10 Ma, crows and ravens experienced a massive geographic expansion that allowed them to reoccupy and even surpass the already broad climatic niche of other Corvidae. In parallel with this geographic and niche expansion, Corvus experienced accelerated rates of species diversification accompanied by a remarkable fast expansion of the morphospace. Corvus for instance exhibits the greatest amount of body size variation and the highest rates of body size evolution in Corvidae. In terms of beak shape, crows and ravens not only reproduced many of the shapes already present in their family but also evolved entirely new beak types in short time periods (e.g., Corvus crassirostris and Corvus moneduloides). Because these morphological traits have a well-established adaptive basis, our findings suggest that the global radiation of crows and ravens cannot merely be understood as the result of dispersal and (non-adaptive) allopatric speciation, but also of considerable adaptive divergence driven by ecological factors.

Biblical worldview: Just after the ravens left Noah’s ark (about 4,400 years ago) and about the time of the subsequent ice age, they rapidly speciated, expanded their range worldwide, and became specialized in (or adapted to) the varying environments they settled in. Some grew larger or smaller, and some had beak size (and even beak color) changes based on the created genetic diversity in the biblical corvid kind. So, does this equate to evolution? No, but it fits perfectly with the biblical account of the global flood, which provided brand-new environments and geographic ranges to colonize, and God’s command concerning all the animals that were on the ark:

Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—that they may swarm on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth. (Genesis 8:17)

So, does speciation equate to evolution? (Certainly students in public schools are taught that it does!) Quoth the raven–nevermore!

“TikTok Pastor” Brandan Robertson Needs to Rethink His Unbiblical Teaching

This recent article caught my attention . . . for all the wrong reasons. As I’ve mentioned hundreds of times over the years, once you open the door for compromise on the book of Genesis, it allows the door to continually be opened wider for compromise on the rest of Scripture. It places a person on a slippery slide of unbelief.

Genesis is the foundation for so many biblical principles, like creation, sin, death, marriage, gender, and sexuality. When the book of Genesis is relegated to myth, moral parable or “mytho-history” (as William Lane Craig puts it), then man’s opinion becomes the standard for determining morality. And this can be clearly seen (and heard) in the teaching of the self-titled “TikTok pastor” Brandan Robertson.

In short, one-minute messages, he has denied the biblical principle of one-man–one-woman marriage, endorsed “gay” marriage and polyamory, and for the past few years called himself a gay “Renegade Reverend” who rethinks sin, though he claims to be “a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” It’s his way of justifying doing whatever he wants to do with relationships/sex and other things.

So, how does “rethinking sin” work out in his “ministry”? Well, Brandan has stated (in clear opposition to Scripture), “For most people, sex before marriage is a healthy expression of the gift of sexuality and is not ‘sinful’ or morally wrong.” For polyamorists, he declares: “Your relationships are holy.” So, I guess “rethinking sin” is ignoring what God calls sin and celebrating it? Unsurprisingly then, Brandan claims, “I don’t believe in hell, yet I choose to follow Jesus because I know it blesses my life and the world around me.”

How can someone who claims that Jesus isn’t the only way of salvation and is unsure of the Resurrection—and who redefines Scripture to embrace sin—call himself a Christian?

Also, he doesn’t know “what happened after the crucifixion.” Perhaps he should read 1 Corinthians 15:13-19, where the resurrection of Christ is viewed as crucial to Christianity, without which our “faith is in vain.” He should also consider 1 Peter 1:3, where the Apostle Peter tells us that God the Father “has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” So, how can someone who claims that Jesus isn’t the only way of salvation and is unsure of the Resurrection—and who redefines Scripture to embrace sin—call himself a Christian? Answer: they can’t.

The Apostle Paul stresses this in the book of Ephesians:

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. (Ephesians 5:3-12)

Brandan needs to actually read all the Bible and study its teachings in context!

Study Finds God’s Design for Marriage Is Best

A recent study of marriages and divorces among 50,000 US women revealed something shocking—God’s design for marriage and sexuality is best! (Okay, that’s not really shocking—to Bible-believing Christians anyway! That’s what we would expect.) What is God’s design? It’s given to us in the very beginning when God created marriage: one man for one woman for life (Genesis 1:27).

As Christians, we understand that God alone has the right to set the rules because he created us, so the mantra of our culture, “my body, my choice,” is fundamentally flawed. We do not have absolute authority over our bodies (neither does any other person). God cares what we do with our bodies, and we are ultimately accountable for him for what we choose to do with and to them (1 Corinthians 6:18–20).

Back to the study. The title of the article summarizing the results of this study read:

The “wisdom” of our day is that couples should wait until they are older to marry and should live together before they decide to wed—after all, the thought goes, you wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it first, and marriage is a much bigger commitment than buying a car! But, as is always the case, the world’s “wisdom” is foolishness, and the “foolishness” of God is where true wisdom is found (1 Corinthians 3:18–20).

This study found that couples who cohabit (which is really fornication (sin) in God’s eyes) “are less likely to be happily married and more likely to land in divorce court.” In other words, waiting until marriage to live together is better for your relationship than “trying it out” before tying the knot. And that’s not surprising—God’s design is that a man and woman marry and then “leave mother and father” to become “one flesh” (Genesis 2:17).

Sadly many professing Christians, particularly in the younger generations, think according to the world’s wisdom and forsake the sexual ethic found in God’s Word. But obedience to God is what is best because, first of all, that’s how we grow in godliness and holiness and how we please our Creator and Savior, but also because God’s design is what is best for us!

Darwin—Did He Shape the Views of Hitler and the Nazis?

Darwinism has a very bloody legacy. Charles Darwin’s ideas on human evolution fueled a specific kind of racism, influencing generations to believe there were higher and lower (primitive and advanced) races (with so-called Caucasians at the top of the evolutionary hierarchy). Darwin’s views influenced a wide variety of evil people, including perhaps the most infamous of all: Adolf Hitler.

The bloodstained legacy of Darwin is highlighted in a new book from historian Richard Weikart. According to a write-up about the book,

The work reveals how Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution shaped the views of Hitler and the Nazis, and how the Nazis championed Darwinism during the Third Reich. Guided by Darwin’sDescent of Manand by early Darwinists such as Ernst Haeckel, the Nazis viewed the “Nordic race” as superior to other races. Worse, they concluded that the Nordic Germans should advance human evolution by ridding the world of “inferior” individuals and races, and claiming more living space for themselves and their offspring. The results were forced euthanasia programs for “unfit” Germans, the Holocaust, and World War II.

We’ve pointed out the connection between Hitler (and the atrocities the Nazis committed) and Darwin and his racist writings and teachings many times before (see, for example, “Humanism: the Most Blood-Stained Religion Ever?” and Hitler and the Nazi Darwinian Worldview by Dr. Jerry Bergman). It’s important to understand this link because ideas have consequences! And the idea of evolution has had, and continues to have, deadly consequences.

The Bible makes it clear that God specially created mankind in his image. We are all descendants of Adam, “the first man” (1 Corinthians 15:45), and Eve, “the mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20). So, there’s only one race—the human race. And this has been confirmed by genetics.

In other words, the “science” of Darwin was wrong (when it contradicts God’s Word, that’s true for any “science”—really interpretations of the evidence), and the history recorded in God’s Word was right all along.

Where’s the cancel culture when it comes to Darwinian evolution being taught in schools and having books on Darwin’s ideas in libraries? They won’t touch Darwin, as he’s the priest of the religion of naturalism.

Is It “Fair” to Allow Men to Compete in Women’s Sports?

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem calls out transgender revolution and for protection of girls-only sports—a nod to a more biblical worldview.

We’re increasingly seeing news items of men dominating women’s sports. These men identify as women and then compete against women, often crushing the competition and even breaking previous records. And that’s just one example of the war on women that is the gender revolution! Sadly, the current US administration’s policy on this whole matter is anti-science and goes against God’s created order and thus is also anti-women.

Recently, the governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, discussed how her state’s new legislation is protecting girls’ and women’s sports in her state. She said:

There are very physical differences between males and females. And that is one of the issues that we’re talking about, the biological differences and making sure that we’re protecting girls’ sports so that girls have a level playing field, they have the opportunity to be successful. And that’s something that was fought for many years ago. We here in South Dakota will protect that right, for boys to play in boys’ sports and girls should play in girls’ sports.

I think a lot of people across the country are trying to take this issue and make it into personal beliefs or to send a message on a different issue when really what this comes down to is fairness, fairness for girls, giving them a level playing field. So that if they compete in these sports they can be successful, and they have the opportunity to go to college, get scholarships, to be a professional and make sure that they’re competing against someone who is given the same gifts and the same level of physical abilities that they were.

She’s right that there are “very physical differences between males and females.” God didn’t make us the same! He designed men and women to be different (yet created equally in his image), and it’s a “very good” design. It’s a sinful heart, in a broken world, that twists God’s very good design and his created order and says men and women are exactly the same or that there’s really no such thing at all—men can be women, and women men. Such thinking is contrary to science and is really a destructive war on women and children.

Once the natural order of things has been corrupted by man, man on his own can’t repair things.

“What is crooked cannot be made straight,” (Ecclesiastes 1:15).

What we need is a return to the authority of God’s Word beginning in Genesis. In our culture, autonomous human reasoning determines right from wrong and what’s supposedly “true.” But it’s God’s infallible, inerrant Word that is the absolute standard for morality and truth. We must patiently and boldly call our friends, family, and the culture at large, back to God’s Word, rather than man’s word.

Italy Heading for “Demographic Crisis” Because Couples Aren’t Having Children

As birth rates across the West are declining largely because of secularist ideas, the Italian government is now incentivizing families to have more children.

It’s the same across the West (and many other nations as well): birth rates are rapidly declining. Italy reportedly has the lowest birth rate in Europe, and according to a new report, is headed for a “‘demographic’ crisis” due to the lack of children being born. Nearly one-quarter of the population is 65 or older, and deaths have surpassed births in Italy for well over a decade . . . and that’s just expected to continue to rise.

The report states:

The age structure of the population already shows a high imbalance in favor of the older generations and there are currently no factors that might suggest a reversal of this trend . . .

Demographic forecasts show that there is little likelihood of a turnaround in the number of births in the years to come.

The Italian government is trying to increase the birth rate by offering financial incentives to families with children, but will this help? Perhaps a little, but likely not much because the ultimate reason many couples are choosing not to have children isn’t economic—it’s religious!

You see, generations have been raised with man’s word as their foundation rather than God’s Word. By and large, the younger generations now hold to the religion of secular humanism. And in this religion, man is the authority (“god”) and man sets the rules. As part of indoctrinating generations into humanism, children and young people have been taught that their happiness is paramount, that children hold you back from education and a successful career, that children are expensive, that catastrophic climate change supposedly paints a bleak future, and that abortion is an essential human right. It’s a focus on self—selfishness. In other words, children aren’t gifts to be treasured—they’re a disposable “choice” some people will make.

It’s thinking like this that likely has resulted in the declining birth rate in Italy, as well as here in America (where only 18% of households are a married mother and father with children). But it’s not surprising! Satan hates the family.

As Christians, we should have a very different view of children. They are gifts, given to us by God, for us to teach and train in the way of righteousness.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28)

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! (Psalm 127:3–5)

Did a “Human Ancestor” Walk like Us but Climb like Apes?

Paleontologist Dr. Gabriela Haynes reviews a recent study on Australopithecus sediba and debunks the claim that it’s a “missing link” between apes and humans.

Australopithecus sediba—did it walk like a human but climb like an ape? According to a recent study, new lower back fossils of this so-called “human ancestor” supposedly “settles a decades old debate proving early hominins used their upper limbs to climb like apes and their lower limbs to walk like humans.” Now, we’ve said for years that A. sediba was just an ape. But does this new study show it was indeed a “missing link,” as the article claims?

Paleontologist Dr. Gabriela Haynes, one of the members of our research team, shares this about A. sebiba and the new study:

The new paper argues that Issa, the name given to the skeleton of this Australopithecus sediba specimen, walked somewhat like a human. However, just because it supposedly could have walked like a human does not make it a human or human ancestor. But because of the researchers’ evolutionary worldview, any slight resemblance, or sign of resemblance, leads them to conclude that man and ape shared a common ancestor.

Bipedalism is thought to have evolved gradually. Since evolutionists have the idea of things evolving over time, they need to find a transition process to fit in this story. But despite their hope, many details of this fossil find bring challenges to their evolutionary assumptions to the table.

The data points to A. sediba being an ape, but their forced interpretation on the feet and legs means that upright walking evolved in different ways during human evolution because they point to a very odd way of walking. An explanation for why walking evolved that way is a challenge for them.

Here are a few things to consider regarding this claim:

The pelvis of this genus, Australophitecus, was modified by a scientist in his lab, taking the shape of a humanlike hip, despite being an apelike hip.

The bones of the hand are very similar to those of orangutans, and dental analysis from Malapa Hominin 1 (MH1), an A. sediba specimen, shows similarities to chimpanzees.

The valgus angle (the angle at which the femur and the tibia meet at the knee) is not good evidence for bipedal locomotion since both orangutans and spider monkeys have the same valgus angle within the range of humans. That is a feature related to the way they walk on tree branches. As the study authors state: “However, other aspects of the bones’ shape suggest that as well as walking, A. sediba probably spent a significant amount of time climbing in tree.”

The fossil material—skull, cranial capacity, body proportions, teeth, and thorax (narrow upper chest)—for this species, Australopithecus sediba, is very apelike, and they all resemble other australopithecines (apes).

The inward curve of the lumbar spine was shown as one of the evidences that this animal could have walked upright, since this feature is typically used to demonstrate adaptations to bipedalism. However, the lumbar lordosis was based on a reconstruction of the pelvis. One prediction based on the lumbar vertebrae produced a strong lumbar lordosis (hyperlordosis). Another reconstruction done produced a less lordotic lumbar (hypolordotic), and a new reconstruction showed a humanlike one. “Therefore, current interpretations of lumbar curvature of A. sediba range from hyperlordotic to hypolordotic.” In other words, anything can fit in this parameter which shows there is a problem.

The new finds “suggest that MH2 (Australopithecus sediba specimen) was probably neither hypolordotic nor hyperlordotic and produces a combined wedging angles value more similar to modern humans than great apes.”

So, the data is hardly conclusive that this creature walked upright—let alone that it’s some kind of human ancestor! From a biblical worldview, we understand that creatures were created according to their kinds, so A. sediba isn’t some kind of missing link between apelike creatures and humans. Like other australopithecines, A. sediba is just an example of variety within the ape kind, and it likely spent much of its time climbing or walking around in trees, like apes do today. It’s only the evolutionists’ interpretations, based on their worldview, that creates an upright walking ancestor to man. They are so desperate to find a supposed missing link!

Are the Rules of Evolution Universal?

Evolutionists mistake natural selection for “amoeba to amphibian” evolution yet again in the tortured logic of a popular science article.

Evolution—will it happen in basically the same way, no matter where in the universe it occurs? An article from New Scientist argues yes, saying it doesn’t matter what “operating system” (e.g., DNA) that life uses: it will evolve via natural selection regardless. But what assumptions are going into such an assertion?

Well, the article describes evolution, which it calls “a fact of life,” in this way:

Here on Earth, organisms that just so happen to be better adapted, or “fit”, for their environment, perhaps by virtue of a fortuitous mutation, tend to survive longer and leave more offspring. The less fit leave fewer descendants and the unfit none at all. Whatever it was that made the winners fit thus accumulates in the next generation. . .

[For example,] if a gene in a colony of woodlice living under a dead log becomes more or less common for some reason, evolution has happened.

But what they’re describing isn’t evolution—it’s natural selection, the supposed mechanism for evolution. The process and the supposed mechanism are not the same thing! Natural selection is an observable process that works on information that’s already present; evolution requires the addition of brand-new genetic information to create new forms and features to turn an amoeba into an amphibian. And that’s the big (actually, impossible) problem they completely overlook in this article!

But what they’re describing isn’t evolution—it’s natural selection, the supposed mechanism for evolution. The process and the supposed mechanism are not the same thing!

The article states that for “spontaneous, sustained accumulation of complexity in a system” to occur, there must be three things present:

There must be variation, to give raw material for change in the first place; there must be differences in fitness, to give an advantage to change; and there must be heritability, to consolidate and pass on change over time. These three things are nothing more than the preconditions for natural selection – and wherever they come together, natural selection inevitably follows. [emphasis added]

They completely overlook where variation comes from! There’s no known naturalistic mechanism that can create brand-new genetic information. Natural selection doesn’t do it (after all, as they state, you need the “raw material,” i.e., variation in DNA, in order for natural selection to happen!), and they can’t just appeal to random mutations. Mutations are mistakes in already-existing DNA and are nearly always harmful or neutral.

Natural selection is an observable process. Creatures, using the incredible amount of genetic diversity God put into their DNA at the beginning, adapt to their environment. It has nothing whatsoever to do with evolution!

Good News! Abortions Reduced by Half in Texas in September

Texas enacted the “heartbeat bill,” and ~2,000 unborn babies were saved in September 2021.

It’s nice to be able to report some good news! In September, the state of Texas enacted a “heartbeat bill” that bans abortion after a baby’s heartbeat can be detected (usually around 6–8 weeks gestational age). Now while this bill certainly doesn’t go far enough—a heartbeat does not determine personhood—the bill has likely saved over 2,000 babies’ lives as abortion rates were slashed in half in the state during September!

We need to continue fighting for life in this nation—the lives of unborn children are depending on it. Taking a human life is murder.

We need to continue fighting for life in this nation—the lives of unborn children are depending on it. Taking a human life is murder. One way we can fight is by legislative change, but such changes are difficult, often don’t last long (a new administration can come in and reverse the policies), and rarely go far enough in protecting unborn lives (biblically and scientifically, a human life begins at the moment of fertilization). That doesn’t mean such changes are not worthwhile, but it’s not all we should be doing. We should be working to change hearts and minds on the issue with the truth of God’s Word (which is confirmed by observational science) and the gospel.
